By Laina Hashipala Eldorado Secondary School was founded in August 1990, with C.J. Platt as its first principal. The current head teacher, Bokkie Mouton, was appointed in 1992. He is, unfortunately, currently on sick leave. The school started with 423 Grade 7 learners. This year the enrolment is 1ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 072 learners from Grades 8-12. The learners’ ratio is 31 to 40 per class, and the school has a staff of 37 teachers and two secretaries. Although the teachers try to provide a conducive environment for learning and promote academic excellence, there are parents who are not participating in their children’s education. We also struggle with a reading culture, something badly needed. The school regularly invites motivational speakers from various companies to encourage the learners to make right choices. The school does not only take a holistic interest in the academic development of its learners, but also in sport disciplines such as soccer, netball, hockey, rugby and volley ball. Social and cultural activities include a regular school newspaper, Scripture Union, TADA, a debating society, an AIDS Club and a school choir.
