By Berio Mbala WINDHOEK The Bank Windhoek Apple Project Recipe Competition organised by Bank Windhoek in partnership with the Chefs Association of Namibia, launched last month, moved to the next step of tasting and judging the cooked food. Media practitioners were given the opportunity to taste the food of the finalists and judge the best three recipes. Among the categories were apple pizza with dates, apple tart with custard, gegeurde normandiese randtert, curry apple soup, apple and onion filling for pancakes, apple ring cake, apple pork fillet surprise, chicken fillets, food apples and honeyed apple and almond surprise. The recipes were judged according to the following criteria: the main ingredient of the recipe had to be fresh apples, preference was given to recipes based on a healthy lifestyle and there had to be a starter, main course, dessert or tart. The judging was based on originality, simplicity, nutritional value, presentation and taste or flavours that serve a minimum of six. The competition was launched under the theme, “Eat Healthy. Live Healthy. Prevent Cancer”. According to Communication Practitioner of Bank Windhoek, Marie du Plessis, it was with this in mind that Bank Windhoek, in partnership with the Chefs Association of Namibia, launched the first ever Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project Recipe Competition last month. “The recipe competition is aimed at developing the right eating habits in all Namibians, thus helping us ensure that we become a much healthier nation overall,” she said. She also said that, through the recipe competition, Bank Windhoek invited the public to enter with their fresh original recipes. She added: “So far only 25 people entered the competition and it was difficult for us to choose the best top ten among the entries.” Vice-President of the Chefs Association of Namibia Terry Jenkinson said, “Chefs Association of Namibia prepared the recipes the way ingredients were sent us by the contestant in order for us to be fair to every one who entered the competition.” Interested people were asked to forward their typed or neatly hand-written recipes and a full-colour photograph of the prepared dish to the Marketing and Corporate Communications Services Department at Bank Windhoek’s Main Building before May 3, 2007. The winner of this creative competition will be announced on May 28 and will receive a prize, said Du Plessis. The public will have an opportunity to taste the winning recipes at the Chefs Association show stand at the Namibia Tourism Expo scheduled for May 30 to June 2, she said. She also said the overall winner of the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project Recipe Competition will enjoy a fabulous weekend for two at Divava Okavango Lodge and Spa.
