By Helge Schutz ALGIERS Namibian wrestler Johannes Homateni was eliminated in the first round of the 55kg Greco Roman style at the All Africa Games on Sunday July 15 Fighting in the 55kg category, Homateni lost 7-0 on points to Thierry Madundu of the Congo. There were no clear holds or throws in the opening minute as the wrestlers seized each other up. Madundu however took a 2-0 lead when he pinned Homateni down on the floor and went ahead 3-0 after two minutes. Homateni couldn’t get a good hold of Madundu who kept on wriggling out of trouble and the Congolese raked in the points after three minutes when he once again pinned Homateni to the ground. The referee called an end to the contest after 3:17 with Madundu leading 7-0 on points. ‘A Frustrating Bout’ A disappointed Homateni said it was a frustrating fight as he could not get hold of his opponent, while his coach, Ernst Venske was also disappointed. “His opponent managed to keep him away the whole time and Johannes could not get into the contest. It’s a pity he lost, because any one of the two could have won that bout,” he said. Homateni is now out of the Greco Roman contest but will still fight in the Freestyle category, which starts on July 18. Namibia’s female wrestler, Sammy Luttig starts her campaign on July 17. Chess Players Struggle Namibia’s chess players have found the going tough at the All Africa Games in Algiers. On July 12 they lost 3,5 – 0,5 to Angola, with Charles Eichab drawing his match. On July 13 they lost 4-0 to both Zimbabwe and South Africa, and on July 14 they lost 3,5 – 0,5 to Algeria, with Eichab once again drawing his match. They also lost 4-0 to Egypt on July 14.
