By Emma Kakololo WINDHOEK The Polytechnic of Namibia on Monday launched a bi-annual journal of language and communication. The journal, called ‘Nawa: Journal of Language and Communication’, will be edited by Dr Jairos Kangira, a senior lecturer in the Department of Communication. It will carry articles dealing with practical research, pedagogical methodologies, critical analyses and theoretical perspectives in language and communication as well as related disciplines such as literature and information and communication technologies. The first issue was published in June and contained articles from universities across the globe. The second issue is expected in December. Dr Kangira appealed to fellow lecturers to contribute scholarly articles to the journal. Speaking at the occasion, the Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Becky Ndjoze-Ojo, who was the guest of honour, said: “With the introduction of ‘Nawa: Journal of Language and Communication’, it should now be easier for some academics at the institution to have their papers published as long as they meet international standards. “There should be no excuse now for those covered by the scope of Nawa not to do research and publish scholarly articles in Nawa.” She said the journal was clear testimony of the research conducted at the institution and the collaboration and cooperation the institution had from other universities all over the world. “In this global village, it is myopic to contend for what you can do on your own locally,” she said. The journal has articles on ICTs which was in line with the Government’s policy on ICT. She said development could not take place without language and communication. “We need language to express and communicate ideas on development. Without communication, we risk going the disastrous way of the Tower of Babel.”
