Home Crime and Courts Detainee caught with dagga

WINDHOEK – A trial-awaiting detainee at the Windhoek Police Station ended up in hot soup when he was caught with 30g of marijuana valued at N$90 last Friday.

Festus Nambinga appeared on a charge of possession of a dependence producing substance in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court yesterday. He was already in custody on a charge of shoplifting, when he was caught last Friday. The drugs were found on him when he was searched before he boarded the police vehicle on the way to court, sources informed New Era. Yesterday, his legal rights were explained to him, and he indicated he would conduct his own defence. He pleaded guilty to the charge and said that he was guilty “with a reason.”

“I am guilty with a reason,” he told Magistrate Ingrid Unengu. “One guy gave me something to give to someone in a vehicle, an elderly man with a beard who was on his way to Katutura,” he said. He added that at the entrance he was searched and the substance was found on him.

“When it was given to me I did not know what it was. My issue was just to hand it over to the man,” he added. The court rejected his guilty plea and the matter was remanded to April 11 for plea and trial. Prosecutor Kandiwapa Nangombe did not object to the accused being granted bail. The prosecutor recommended bail of N$500.
