WINDHOEK – As a humanitarian gesture in support of children living with cancer in Namibia, the Lubbe Motor Group intends to raise N$500 000 by riding on four tractors to Swakopmund.

The journey that would also serve as an opportunity to raise awareness on cancer will start on Thursday, March 20 and the team is expected to arrive in Swakopmund on the Saturday. The tractors will depart from Windhoek at 05h00 and if all goes as planned they will arrive at around 10h00 on a Saturday. The team is asking for sponsorships for every kilometre covered and a pledge form would have to be filled out. While undertaking the journey that will see the tractors drive at 30km/h, the team will have a donation box for public contributions wherever the tractors will stop enroute to the coast.

Individuals and companies that want to contribute to the drive are urged to contact the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) or the Lubbe Motor Group for pledge forms. At a briefing yesterday, Lubbe Motor Group MD Etienne Lubbe explained that the team came up with the tractor idea as a fundraising means to get out of the easy and comfortable way of raising funds and to do something uncomfortable. “It’s just too easy to give money, we want to experience some inconvenience,” said Lubbe. He said the team would not inconvenience motorists on the road and would pull off whenever there is high traffic volumes. The money raised will go to the Cancer Association of Namibia as they are in dire need of funds to help children with cancer from as young as one year, Reinette Koegelenberg of the Cancer Association of Namibia said. From Swakopmund, the tractors will return to Windhoek by truck. It is the first time the group will embark on such an initiative and they plan on making it an annual event, all for the benefit of cancer patients.
