WINDHOEK – The Namibian national cycling team, which is sponsored by Nedbank, has been invited to compete in one of the biggest road cycling events in Africa, the Tropicale Amissa Bongo, also known as the Tour of Gabon, starting January 13-19 in that country.

Two Tour de France teams (Europcar and Cofidis) will be competing in the event as well, alongside two other big international teams (MTN and Caja Rujal) and eight other African national teams.

This is the first time ever that the Namibian national team has received such a prestigious invitation – after the recent African Championships in Egypt where Namibia brought home three medals to prove once again Namibian cycling is on the rise.

The success in Egypt and the trip to Gabon have been made possible thanks to the amazing support from Nedbank. The support extended itself to a training camp in Omaruru in the run-up to the Tropicale.

Five members of the Namibian national cycling team and the Physically Active Youth Development team took part in a ten-day training camp in Omaruru under the auspices of the Namibia Cycling Federation (NCF) President Mannie Heymans and seasoned rider Dan Craven.

The camp was used to fine-tune the participants’ fitness and had the team train together in preparation for the tour, where they will be heavily relying on each other. Cadence Nutrition played an important role, providing the energy products for the camp and will do likewise for the upcoming tour.
