A Tribute to Spies

Some of the timeless stories of the late Namibian Afrikaner comedian, writer and newspaper editor, Jan Spies, will be staged for the first time next month as a tribute to his creative prowess. The presentation by two local performing female artists will be staged as part of Bank Windhoek Festival’s Sjorde programme. “Although a number of Spies stories were staged in the past, a dramatic format thereof was never done by a single narrator. Two friends go fishing, during which outing the commercial world is weighed against the simple world in which Spies’s stories have been created,” a statement said this week. Junelle Stroh, who studied drama at the Polytechnic in Pretoria and in London, portrays a part in the stage presentation. She is currently teaching drama at the Windhoek International School. The other role-player is Tanya Terblanche who in the past, together with Aldo Behrens and Danie Strydom, collectively presented a similar show of Spies’s works. Terblanche, a well-known actress on Windhoek’s stages, studied at the University of Stellenbosch. Her recent stage works include a school production of “District Six” in South Africa. The hour-long show, Spies Plesier, will be presented on May 24 at Studio 77. Tickets at N$40 can already be bought by phoning 081ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 312ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 2731.
