Abandoned Opuwo newborn undergoing evaluation

OPUWO – A newborn baby girl is currently undergoing evaluation at the Opuwo State Hospital in the Kunene region after she was reportedly found abandoned by her mother at the town on Wednesday.

In an interview with Nampa on Friday, Namibian Police Force (NamPol) regional police liaison officer Chief Inspector Vehangaiza Hindjou said authorities were alerted around 20h30 on Wednesday about a baby being dumped near the Roads Authority office in Opuwo.

“Community members notified us after passersby were drawn to the sound of a baby’s cries, discovered her, wrapped her in a blanket, and then contacted the authorities. It remains uncertain how long the two-day baby girl had been left unattended,” she said.

Hindjou stated that no charges have been laid against the baby’s mother.

She has since been located and is currently still under the care of a social worker.

The police will wait for recommendations and findings from the social worker before any action is taken, she said.
