WINDHOEK – The absence of a magistrate yesterday delayed a fraud case involving former acting secretary general of the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) Alfred Angula.
Angula was supposed to plead to the charges against him in the Katutura Magistrate’s Court, but the matter has now been remanded to June 25.
Angula was granted bail of N$50 000 in October last year, which was extended until his next appearance.
He faces charges of fraud and allegedly stealing from from the Namibia Farmworkers Union (Nafwu) involving about N$1.2 million. The money was donated to the union by a foreign donor agency.
Angula was arrested after the donor agency, Fes Belgium, laid charges of fraud and theft against him.
The offences were allegedly committed between January 31, 2012 and December 31, 2012.
Angula was arrested in December last year, and was denied bail during his first appearance.
Only after a formal bail hearing was held did he eventually get bail.
Angula was the secretary general of Nafwu until July 2011, when he took up the position of acting secretary general of the NUNW, the umbrella union, following the unceremonious departure of Evilastus Kaaronda.
