EPUKIRO – The 10th edition of the Alex Angermund Horse Racing Competition will be held at Rehoboth Race Track in the Hardap region tomorrow.

Angermund, the late horse racing legend, died 15 years ago.

Angermund Racing (AR), under the auspices of the Namibia Horse Racing Association, will use the racing event to pay homage to Alex Angermund for his contribution to the horse racing sport in the country.

In an interview with New Era Sport, Nicky Angermund, who is the chief organiser of the event, said the annual event attracted 100 race horses from various clubs countrywide.

“This is an indication that my father was an icon in horseracing sport; the community values his contribution, and I have to compliment them for that,” Nicky said.

He added that horseracing is developing, and that is through the footprints left by the elders.

“We are enjoying this sport as a family, and we see growth in every competition we are hosting,” he alluded.

AR, compliments of Standard Bank Namibia, put aside N$100 000 for the 15-sprint event.

“In addition to cash prize money, the winning horses will take home trophies and medals,” highlighted Nicky.

The chief organiser added that 70 registered import horses, better known as thoroughbreds, will vie for 10 plates, whereas 30 Nambreds will compete in five sprints only.

The 1400-metre (m) distance will be the main race for both Nambred and thoroughbred horses.

“We will also award the jockey of the series with a trophy plus a N$1 000 cash prize as motivation to the man on the horse,” he said.

However, the chief organiser added that there will be a mixed race of both Nambred and Thoroughbred horses who will battle in the 1800 m.

The competition is expected to start at 10h00.
