All roads lead to Otjinene

Horse racing fever has gripped the town of Otjinene ahead of tomorrow when the Namibia Horse Racing Association (NHRA) hosts the highly anticipated 2025 Easter Cup – their second major event of the year, following a thrilling season opener in Okahandja.

The Easter Cup promises a day of high-stakes excitement with 17 action-packed races on the card, featuring approximately 50 top-tier horses from across the country. A total of N$120 000 in prize money is up for grabs, drawing elite competitors and fans alike to what is expected to be the highlight of the NHRA calendar.

Speaking to New Era, NHRA spokesperson Chantal Mouton said the event is more than just a race, it’s a celebration of the sport and community. “We’re looking forward to welcoming fans from all over the country to Otjinene. The Easter Cup is about promoting talent and fostering a sense of unity through this shared passion for horse racing.”

The headline race of the day is set to be the Import Open 2000-metre (m) event which will see some of Namibia’s finest thoroughbreds go head-to-head. Among the frontrunners are the formidable Chief Helmet from the Otjinene Supporters Club, the ever-consistent Woodland Ridge representing Junius Racing, and strong contenders Action Time, Professor Supporters Club, and Equeery, also from the Otjinene Supporters Club.

Adding excitement to the day’s programme, the Nambred Open 1800-m race will bring together local favourites including Boma from Harambee Horse Racing Club, Destiny of Khomas Racing, and the crowd-rousing Bin Laden from the Professor Supporters Club. “With a mix of speed, power, and adrenaline spikes promised on the track, the NHRA is calling on all horse racing enthusiasts and curious spectators to come out in full force. Beyond the races, visitors can expect a vibrant atmosphere, local entertainment, and a strong sense of community pride.

“Otjinene is ready. We’ve put everything in place for a successful event,” added Mouton. “We’re inviting everyone – families, fans, and first-timers to join us for what will surely be a memorable day.”
