WALVIS BAY – A Walvis Bay resident has shot and killed a suspected thief who was on his roof, allegedly attempting to break into his house.

The incident occurred in Kuisebmond early on Tuesday morning, the police confirmed. Deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu said yesterday that the deceased is 19 years old, and was found dead on the roof of the house.

He added that the homeowner, who is now accused of murder after fatally wounding the alleged thief, was awakened by strange noises on his roof. “The homeowner then went to his kitchen to investigate, and saw a male person standing inside his yard, holding one of his washing basins. The suspect saw the homeowner, dropped the basin and ran,” Iikuyu said.

The deceased allegedly then climbed onto the roof, whereby the owner of the house fired warning shots with his pistol in the direction of the deceased.

“As a result, one of the bullets allegedly struck the victim in his abdomen. He was later found dead on the roof. He was also found with stolen items in his trousers, as well as another basin that belongs to the suspect,” the officer explained.

They now believe that the deceased was with another person who was already on the roof of the suspect’s house, to whom he was throwing the stolen goods.

According to Iikuyu, the homeowner has not been arrested yet as an investigation is ongoing. The latter has also opened a case of theft against the deceased and the alleged accomplice, who fled from the scene.
