Windhoek – The Khomas Boxing Federation held its second one-day tournament of the year here on Saturday, with amateur boxers battling it out in the Elite and Junior Cadet categories.
The bouts produced a few setbacks that saw one of the boxers knocked out, while another sustained a cut under his eye. “It is difficult to mobilise medical personnel in terms of getting a medical doctor or nurses and an ambulance to our events. Boxing is a contact sport and injuries of this nature are likely to happen when we stage boxing tournaments,” said one of the organisers.
Overall, the tourney was described as a great success and was mainly used as a platform to prepare the athletes for the upcoming Khomas Boxing Federation Annual Championship.
Last weekend’s event was graced by two former boxing greats, Joe Archer and Joe Murangi. All affiliated clubs, Golden Boxing Club (GBC), Soweto Boxing Club (SBC), MTC Nestor “Sunshine” Tobias Boxing and Fitness Academy (NSTBFA), After School Centre (ASC), Jacob “Mistake” Gariseb Boxing and Fitness University (JMGBFU), Unam Boxing Club (UBC) and Warriors Promotion Boxing Academy (WPBA) were represented in the event.
The Khomas Elite team has so far participated in two regional tourneys, one organised by Knockout Boxing Club from Otavi on 16 May 2015 and the other by the 21 Motorised Brigade Boxing Club on June 6, 2015 in Windhoek.
At these tournaments, the Northern Boxing Team, Nampol NDF, Otjozondjupa and Khomas Boxing Team and NDF, as well as Nampol and Khomas Boxing Team were also in action, but at the end of the day it was the Khomas Boxing Federation that took top honours as the Best Team at both tournaments.
The 2015 Khomas Boxing Federation Championship is slated for July 31 to August 1.
