WINDHOEK – The Namibian Boxing Federation (NBF) will host a two-nations amateur boxing tournament between Namibia and South Africa at the Windhoek Country Club, Resort and Casino on May 10, where the crème de la crème from both countries will square off against each other.
NBF Secretary-General, Joe Kaperu says they would basically be using the same team that participated at the African Boxing Confederation (ABC) Zone-4 Elite Boxing Championship held in Pretoria, South Africa recently, but this time only adding two or three heavyweight boxers to the team. The young and promising boxers will be under the watchful eyes of Mistake Gariseb as head coach and Josua Veikko as his assistant.
Announcing the tournament, Kaperu said the main objective of hosting the two-nations competition is to prepare boxers for upcoming international competitions such as the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland during July 23 – August 3 later this year and the much anticipated 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In ensuring that Namibia is well on track for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, Kaperu said the NBF has organized a special joint training camp with the Spanish Boxing Federation (SBF) for all the boxers who will represent Namibia at the games.
The training camp, which starts around May 16, will take place in Spain where big-time campaigners like Russia and Cuba will also feature.
