By Kuvee Kangueehi Windhoek The Gobabis magistrate court has granted bail to an Aminuis farmer who was arrested last week Friday on charges of illegal possession of firearms. Tjiuma Kamberipa was released on bail of N$3 500 yesterday. The 52-year-old farmer appeared before the Gobabis magistrate’s court and was officially charged with possessing three unlicensed firearms and bullets. The firearms are an R5 automatic rifle, a 7,65 mm pistol and a 9 mm Makarof pistol. A police officer at Gobabis, Michael Matengu, confirmed the court appearance to New Era and noted that the bail application attracted a huge crowd. Matengu said the court was fully packed by farmers who came from as far as Aminuis to hear the bail application. The police officer said there was a small celebration by the crowd after bail was granted. Bail was paid immediately. The police officer however noted that the arrest is not officially linked to the tribal clashes that took place three weeks ago in Aminuis, but the search, which led to the discovery, was triggered by the violent tribal clashes. Court clerk Marine Visser, acting as magistrate, remanded the accused and instructed him to appear before the court again on January 25 next year. The case was postponed on grounds of the matter needing further investigation. Concetae Olivier handled the prosecution’s case and Kamberipa was legally represented in court.
