AN appoints Goagoses acting president

AN appoints Goagoses acting president

The former president of Netball Namibia Rebekka Goagoses has been appointed acting president of Africa Netball (AN).

This after the executive board of AN held a special meeting on Tuesday to deliberate on the ongoing matter concerning the provisional suspension of president Cecilia Molokwane of South Africa by World Netball. Following thorough discussions, the board unanimously agreed to appoint Goagoses and has entrusted her with ensuring continuity and stability in leadership during this transitional period.

According to international reports, Molokwane has been dogged by allegations of maladministration over the past few years and an internal investigation and disciplinary hearing are underway.

Molokwane tenure’s highlight is undoubtedly bringing the Netball World Cup to Africa for the first time, hosted in Cape Town in 2023. Under her leadership, the Proteas also managed fourth place at the 2019 World Cup, the team’s highest placing since a silver medal in 1995.

In a statement, AN said it is important to emphasise that Molokwane is not fully suspended but is under provisional suspension while investigations are ongoing.

“AN remains resolute in its support for Molokwane during this process and recognizes her invaluable contributions to the growth and development of netball across the continent.

“Following the appointment of the acting president, the board convened an urgent meeting with council members to formally communicate this decision and to garner their support. The board calls upon all members and stakeholders to unite in their backing of both Molokwane and Goagoses, as they each continue to fulfil their respective roles in line with the organization’s values.”

In addition, in the statement AN reaffirms its commitment to good governance, transparency, and the continued advancement of netball across Africa. “Together, we will ensure the integrity of our sport and the unity of our community.” – lmupetami@nepc.com.na
