WINDHOEK – Suspended acting secretary-general of the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW), Alfred Angula, will plea next month to the fraud charges he faces in the Katutura Magistrate’s Court.

Magistrate Conchita Olivier deferred the matter to November 24. In June, the matter was remanded to October 22 because Olivier was not available.

On Wednesday, the matter was again remanded to November 24 giving the unionist more time.

Angula was out on bail of N$50 000 last year, which was also extended until his next appearance.

He faces a charge of fraud and theft from the Namibia Farmworkers Union (NAFWU) involving about N$1.2 million, according to the charge sheet. The money was donated to the union by a foreign donor agency.

Angula was arrested after the donor agency, Fes Belgium, laid charges of fraud and theft against him.

The offence was allegedly committed between January 31, 2012, and December 31, 2012.

Angula was arrested in December last year, and he was initially denied bail during his first appearance.

Only after a formal bail hearing was he granted bail.

Angula was the secretary-general of NAFWU until July 2011, when he took up the position of acting secretary-general of the NUNW, the umbrella union following the departure of Evilastus Kaaronda.
