April revives age-old soap tradition

What began as a small backyard operation in Windhoek has grown into a successful business. Boerseep, a traditional soap brand founded by local entrepreneur Martha April during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, is now available on shelves across the country.

Using a time-honoured recipe consisting of just three ingredients – animal fat, caustic soda and water – April has turned a simple formula into a thriving business.

With no additives or preservatives, Boerseep has gained popularity for its natural and effective cleaning properties.

Boerseep, which translates to “farmer’s soap”, is known for its versatility.

April offers the product in three forms – the traditional bar, grated flakes and a gel that works wonders on stubborn stains.

“During Covid-19, it was very difficult for us to make a living. We started in our backyard – and as the years went by, we began supplying it to shops. First Hochland Spar, then all the Spar branches in Windhoek and later Woermann Brock, OK Foods and Metro,” she said.

Today, Boerseep can be found in major retailers in Windhoek and beyond.

Plans for cross-border supply to South Africa are on the horizon.

However, the path has not been without hurdles. Money has been the biggest challenge.

“I started out of my own pocket, so we struggled a lot with start-up capital. Even now, we need more space and funds for promotions because many people don’t know the product yet,” April said. Those who know the soap remain loyal.

Many grew up with the soap and value its natural, old-fashioned quality.

“It’s a product that our ancestors used. When we brought it back, people were excited, because they knew how it worked.” April stated.

Her business is also rooted in giving back.

Last month, she donated bars of soap to learners at Gammams Primary School, a gesture she says reflects her belief in community care. Every three months, she and her team also donate to churches and soup kitchens across Windhoek.

This ensures the product benefits those most in need.

For April, the greatest joy is seeing each batch succeed.

With contracts already in place with major retail chains, April is now focused on growing sales and strengthening the brand’s presence nationwide.
