The Rössing National Marathon Championship is set to make its highly anticipated return for the 34th consecutive year this Saturday in the coastal town of Swakopmund, featuring prominent runners like Alina Armas and seasoned marathoner Beata Naigambo.
Armas, who is now 41 years of age, is a Namibian long-distance specialist, and has participated in several big races, including the 2016 Summer Olympics, where she represented Namibia on the global stage. Known for her dedication to the marathon, she will be looking to add another strong performance to her career. The 44-year-old Naigambo, on the other hand, was a dominant figure in international marathons, with notable finishes in races like the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon and Cape Town Marathon.
Naigambo has also represented Namibia in the Olympic Games, including the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The marathon is expected to attract around 3 000 runners, with Rössing Corporate Communications Manager Daylight Ekandjo emphasising that the Rössing Marathon is an important part of the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts and has become a significant event on Namibia’s sports calendar.
This year’s event will feature a full marathon of 42.2 kilometres, along with a half marathon (21.1 km) and a 10 km run, ensuring participants of all abilities can join the action. Additionally, a 5 km fun walk will take place in support of the Cancer Association of Namibia.
