Namibian long-distance athletes Alina Armas and Matias Simon stole the limelight at the 2025 Husab Marathon, clinching victories in the women’s and men’s 42.2-kilometre races respectively, during Saturday’s competition held in the scenic Namib-Naukluft National Park.
In the women’s division, veteran runner Armas proved she still has what it takes to dominate the long-distance scene, claiming the female veteran title in 3:03:22. Simon showcased incredible stamina and strategic pacing to finish first in the men’s open category with a remarkable time of 2 hours, 24 minutes, and 7 seconds.
“I am happy with the way I performed,” said Armas, who continues to inspire with her consistency and dedication to the sport.
This year’s edition of the marathon drew a record-breaking 1 311 runners from across Namibia and abroad according to the organisers, further cementing the Husab Marathon’s reputation as one of the country’s premier athletic events.
Participants competed across four race categories — 5km, 10km, 21.1km (half marathon), and the 42.2km full marathon catering to runners of all levels and ages.
Hosted by Swakop Uranium, the marathon is more than just a physical challenge. Speaking at the event, Swakop Uranium chief executive officer Luo Wei emphasized the broader meaning of the race.
“This marathon is not only about endurance; it represents the values of resilience, togetherness, and the relentless pursuit of excellence that define both our company and our communities,” Wei stated.
As part of its ongoing commitment to national development, Swakop Uranium also announced a N$2 million investment for 2025 aimed at supporting education and sports initiatives in Namibia. These funds will go towards the establishment of computer laboratories in selected schools and other youth development projects. “We are dedicated to creating opportunities where young people can develop and thrive,” Wei added, highlighting the company’s vision for long-term impact.
The event was graced by several high-profile guests, including the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, Zhao Weiping, and Erongo governor Neville Andre, underscoring the growing importance of the Husab Marathon as both a sporting and community-building platform in Namibia. -lmupetami@nepc.com.na
