Home Art Life Arts festive season festival opens tonight at the Coast

WINDHOEK– Bank Windhoek Swakopmunder Musikwoche present Namibian art production, ‘Jokob Marengo- Lest We Forget,’  ‘Variations on a Blue Bench,’ ‘A Kalahari Potpourri for Christmas’ and various musical concerts, in Swakopmund, Henties Bay and Walvis Bay during the Bank Windhoek Arts Festival (BWAF) on December   6 28.

“For the last four years Bank Windhoek Arts Festival (BWAF) has brought various quality art productions to Swakopmund. We again decided to shift the focus of our December 2013 arts festival programme to the coast, as many people flock to the coast for the festive season and they have more time to attend the shows and appreciate quality art,” says Riaan Van Rooyen, Head of Corporate Communication and Social Investment at Bank Windhoek.  The BAWF, with the co-operation of the National Theatre of Namibia (NTN), will present a premium musical production, commemorating the life of a Namibian legend and leader of the Bondelswart, Jakob Marengo.

“Based on the Henry Bailey texts from Masson, Uwe Timm and Dorian Haarhoff, Aldo Behrens has crafted an original Namibian musical text for which Marcellinus Swartbooi composed a NAMA- suite with 10 variations. Jacus Krige has arranged the compositions for the band and choir, and Theodore Coookson leads the Bank Windhoek Kalahari Ensemble. This theatre production entitled ‘Jakob Marengo –Lest we Forget’, will be performed on December  18, 19 and 21 December at 20:00h at the Bank Windhoek NPS Kulturaula in Swakopmund,” informs van Rooyen.

Classical music lovers can look forward to the Bank Windhoek Swakopmunder Musikwoche from on December 6 to 26, also at the Bank Windhoek NPS Kulturaula. Concerts that are open to the public will start on December 10-15.

Variation on a Blue Bench will also be staged. This play reflect a meeting between a retired academic and a notorious bum, meeting by chance on one of the many colourful benches at the Swakopmund Mole, specifically a blues bench. It will be performed at the Bank Windhoek NPS Kulturaula on December 18 at 15H00 and 20 at 20H00.

To conclude the performances of the festive season, the BWAF will present a Kalahari potpourri, a Christmas programme featuring the well-know Bank Windhoek Kalahari Ensemble with the Swakopmund-based Trio Feminale and guest artist, Randall Wicomb. The programme is filled with all the favourite hits of the last four musicals of the Bank Windhoek Kalahari Ensemble. This exciting performance will be on December 23, 27 and 28 at 20H00 at the Bank Windhoek NPS Kulturaula.
