Assault Charges Laid by Acting CEO

Home Archived Assault Charges Laid by Acting CEO

By Frederick Philander WINDHOEK The Police at Kalkrand are investigating charges of assault against a woman who on Monday threatened to grievously injure the acting CEO of the Village Council, Anne-Marie van Rooi. The assault charge is a sequel to a protest march last week by members of the community against Van Rooi. They want her to be suspended for alleged misappropriation of government funds. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rural Development, Erastus Negonga, earlier this week sided with the CEO and told the Local Authority that she should remain in her post as Acting CEO According to Van Rooi, a young woman stormed into her office on Monday with a brick to physically harm her. The father of the would-be assailant took the brick away in the nick of time, after which formal charges were laid with the Namibian Police at the village. The District Commander, Chief-Inspector Meyer of the Namibian Police at Mariental, yesterday confirmed that a case of assault is being investigated at Kalkrand. It is understood that the so-called ‘concerned group’ of villagers are hard at work with plans to have Van Rooi removed from her job, and from the village.
