The Khomas Senior Athletics Championships will take place tomorrow at the Independence Stadium, bringing together close to 150 male and female athletes for a full programme of track and field events.
Event organiser Leoni van Rensburg said competitors will battle it out in disciplines including the 5 000 metres (m), hammer throw, high jump, discus, 1 500m, shot put, long jump, 100m, 110m hurdles, 800m, javelin, 400m hurdles, as well as the 4x100m relay and mixed 4x400m relay.
Van Rensburg noted that the competition has been opened to athletes from outside Windhoek in response to the limited number of events available in other regions. Participants from Otjozondjupa, Omaheke, Hardap, Kavango, Oshana, //Karas and Erongo regions have all confirmed entries. She added that the event will proceed regardless of weather conditions.
Among the standout athletes expected to compete are high jumpers Benjamin Hendriks, Hallelujah Kaulinge, and Karsten Diergaardt, along with marathon runner David Dam and 400m sprinter Nicholis Du Plessis.
In the men’s 100m, competitors include paraathlete Bradley Murere who will compete against able bodied athletes, Elton Hoeseb, and Elvis Gaseb, while Lionel Coetze is set to contest the long jump.
Jasper Engelbreght will compete in the men’s javelin, and in the women’s events, Frieda Iithele will take part in the long jump, Jade Nangula will run the 100m, and the shot put event will feature Matriek Weitz among others
