The Unam Athletics Club and Nust Welwitschias 77 Athletics Club, in collaboration with Khomas Regional Athletics hosted a championship last Saturday at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek.
Theresia Nambandi, Marketing Officer for Unam Athletics Club said the championship was aimed at celebrating women in athletics in particular, while also marking Namibia’s 36th Independence anniversary. She added that the event provided a crucial platform for athletes to qualify for the African Youth Games, set to take place later this year.
“The championship consisted of athletes not only from the Khomas Region, but also from Erongo, Otjozondjupa and Hardap regions. We brought athletes together from across the country to showcase their talent and stand a chance of qualifying for international competition,” said Nambandi.
The event featured a range of track and field disciplines, including the hammer throw, shot put, discus, javelin, long jump, high jump, triple jump, 100m and 110m hurdles, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, 100m and 200m sprints.
The championship attracted both emerging and experienced athletes eager to test their abilities against strong competition.
Elleke Potgieter from Windhoek Gymnasium Athletics Club expressed her enthusiasm for the competition, saying she hoped to gain valuable experience while improving on her personal best performances.
Organisers described the championship as a success, noting the high level of participation and performance, and emphasised the importance of such events in developing athletics in Namibia.
