Windhoek
The matter in which a Windhoek businessman allegedly shot dead a Finnish national at a local sports bar in Windhoek in August last year will proceed on April 25 in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court.
The case of Danne Rodney Shaningwa, 43, was remanded because “there are 42 points of instructions from the prosecutor general which need to be carried out. Most of the instructions were not carried out due to a bail application which was lodged by Shaningwa,” prosecutor Tatelo Lusepani informed the court on Wednesday.
In October last year Monica Angula from Dr Weder, Kauta & Hoveka Incorporated law firm, who represented Shaningwa in August, withdrew from the case due to a conflict of interest.
Shaningwa is now represented by Vetu Uanivi from Uanivi Law Chambers. Last year Shaningwa was denied bail. Uanivi informed the court “we have requested that the matter be transcribed to be able to appeal the bail judgment. I would also like to have the documents returned as those were the original documents.”
Magistrate Justine Asino replied that the documents were handed in as exhibits and are part of the bail hearing, thus the court will not just merely return the documents.
Uanivi then said that the magistrate who heard the bail hearing promised to make copies and hand back the originals. Asino informed Uanivi to take up the matter with the magistrate involved. During his first appearance in August the prosecution objected to bail on grounds Shaningwa may abscond from Namibia while free on bail to avoid prosecution, due to the seriousness of the charge he is facing.
The other reason given for the refusal to grant bail was that it would not be in the interest of the administration of justice and the public at large to grant Shaningwa bail, as the police investigation was still at an early stage and he may interfere with the investigation.
Shaningwa was arrested at his family home in Windhoek North last August after being on the run for almost two days. He allegedly fired nine rounds from his pistol, killing Finnish national Ronni Marco Kristian Uolevi, 42, on the spot in Bell Street in the southern industrial area of Windhoek after Uolevi apparently drove into the back of his vehicle with a Land Rover Discovery.
After the incident unsubstantiated reports suggested that a woman – who allegedly got into Uolevi’s vehicle that night – was involved in the altercation.
