WINDHOEK – Local beach volleyball players will this coming weekend go head-to-head in the highly competitive Maerua Superspar tournament at the DTS Sports Ground in Windhoek. The tourney also forms part of the Kia Namibia National Beach Volleyball Tour.
In the men’s division, veteran Achim Lück is sitting firmly in the driver’s seat with a total of 142 points, having won the last two tournaments with his long time partner Peter Brinkmann. Although Brinkmann missed out on one of the events and is therefore unlikely to catch up with the top three, Lück is in a good position to emerge as the overall winner tomorrow. His toughest opponents will once again be the U-21 national team duo of Gerard Fischer and Tin Hlupic. The two youngsters failed to clinch the top spot for a while, after losing out some valuable points along the way. The pair currently sit on 130 points each.
Meanwhile, the junior team of Jan Erik Sack and Roman von Ludwiger could also be serious contenders, having improved immensely since the beginning of the season. In the women’s category, there seems to be no stopping Anita Kinder and Simone von Wietersheim who currently lead the log with an overwhelming 130 points each. The two have been dominating the scene ever since the formidable pair of Antje Kesselmann and Wiebke Höritzauer pulled out due to personal issues.
Third placed Teja Lück currently sits on 80 points after teaming up with various partners this season, she will now play alongside her old partner Rosi Hennes. The pressure will be on Lück this coming weekend as the likes of Kim Seebach, Stephanie Palmhert, Mareike Talkenberg and Maike Brandt, are all vying for the third place. It will also be a heated affair in the popular Youth & Social category, since current log leader Arne Putensen and 2nd placed Phillip Schulz, who are separated by only 11 points, will likely go all out to pull one or two surprises.
