Beauties extend lead, Ongos thrash Okahandja in WSL action

Beauties extend lead, Ongos thrash Okahandja in WSL action

Beauties FC extended their lead in the FNB Women Super League (WSL) table after collecting six valuable points over the weekend.

They started strongly with a 6-1 victory over Nust Babes on Friday and followed it up with a crucial 2-1 win against Daughters and this firmed their position at the top of the log standings with 51 points from 16 games played this season.

Beauties head coach Salome Iyambo, yesterday said despite securing maximum points, she was dissatisfied with yesterday’s performance, as her players didn’t adhere to the game plan.

“We had a bad game today; it’s not how we envisioned the proceedings before the match. We wasted so many chances, and the players failed to stick to our game plan, which meant our game was not the best we could produce on the day,” she said.

Despite the performance not meeting her expectations, Iyambo emphasized the importance of the maximum points the collected. “What is important is we collected the much-needed points. Heading forward, we just have to figure out where we need to correct things and move forward,” she added.

Meanwhile, defending champions Ongos hit a setback on Saturday drawing 0-0 against V-Power Angels but they bounced back emphatically yesterday with 17-1 destruction of hapless Okahandja.

This win keeps the reigning champions in second position with 45 points, three points behind Beauties, who also have a game in hand.

In other results from the weekend, coastal outfit Arrows Ladies edged out Windhoek City 3-2 in an exciting match on Saturday, and African Stars Queens secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Namib Daughters.

Meanwhile, Ongos coach Shama Gure commented on the title race: “Fortune is not in our hand, but we hope whoever is eager to take it will take it. But for us, whatever happens, we will take it from there.”

In a match yesterday, Julinho Ladies secured a 2-0 win over Windhoek City.
