The Namibia Olympic Committee (NNOC) has joined a horde of countries in celebrating popular Olympic Day along with 204 National Olympic Committees around the world with various sports activities organised in the towns of Okahandja, Tsumeb, Omaruru, Keetmanshoop, Lüderitz and Oshakati.

As has become customary practice, Olympic Day takes place on June 28.

Olympic Day highlights the importance of sport in society and its contribution in the social integration of every human being,” reads a statement by NNOC secretary Joan Smit.

Thousands of men, women, children – both able-bodied and those with disabilities – are expected to respond to the appeal of all the NOCs to commemorate the creation of the International Olympic Committee by Pierre de Coubertin on June 23, 1894.

This year, Olympic Day will be used to highlight activities that focus on learning, moving and discovering through sports. The organisers expect people from all walks of life to take part in this fun day, involving all schools, the private and public sector in various cities and towns.

The day will also include activities to conservethe environment, with a number of trees to be planted in various towns.
