Home National Big year for African women’s football… Brave Gladiators on break

WINDHOEK – Following their 2-1 win at home against the Westphalia Under-18 ladies team last Wednesday, the Brave Gladiators team has been released from camp and will only report back on May 10 ahead of their trip to Germany on the 18th of next month in preparation for the upcoming 9th edition of the CAF African Women’s Champions.

The Gladiators defeated Westphalia at the Sam Nujoma Stadium with goals from Memory Ngonda and Thomalina Adams. The result saw the hosts claiming the 3-match series 2-1, having beaten Westphalia in Windhoek on Easter Friday 1-0 before going down 2-1 on Easter Sunday in Swakopmund. Jackey Gertze of the Namibia Football Association (NFA) Women’s Desk said the technical team is very grateful to Westphalia for the three matches and expressed satisfaction with the level of competitiveness offered by the visitors. “It was strong opposition, despite their young age, but most of our players are also young. We will regroup ahead of the trip to Westphalia for two weeks where the girls will play competitive friendlies against Germany’s top women’s football sides.”

Gertze added that it a very big year for African women’s football and the countries are getting more cautious as the date of the championships draws closer. “Hopefully, when we come back from Germany we will be able to organize a couple of continental friendlies just to measure our preparedness and see where we can improve and what we can expect during the championships in October,” she said.
