WINDHOEK – The DTS/Fabupharm beach volleyball tourney at the DTS sports ground in Windhoek last weekend was a huge success with 33 teams in action. Participants consisted of 7 men teams, 7 ladies teams, 5 mixed 4- a-side social teams, 9 youth/social 2-a-side teams and 5 junior girls 2-a-side teams. The tournament formed part of the 2014 Namibian Beach Volleyball Series.

With N$5 000 in prize money at stake, teams fought hard to reach the podium.

In the 4-a-side category, 10 matches were played on the grass courts that saw the fired-up Farmers Attack outfit winning all their games to walk away with the first prize, leaving Meatco Paradise and VC Klappstuhl to pick up the pieces for 2nd and 3rd places – in that order.

In the junior girls category, 5 teams competed in the round system to determine the best team.

Winning all their games without losing a single set, the combination of Kristin Schulz and Cara de Oliveira clinched top position with Carmen Curschmann and Michaela Böhringer adrift in 2nd spot while the pair of Aila Bareras and Elena Bohn ended 3rd..

The ladies category attracted 7 teams battling it out including some newly formed teams, with the number 1 seeded team of Rosi Hennes and Teja Lück losing their opening tie 1-2 against the newly formed Swakopmund/Windhoek combination of Lizette Röttcher and Dorle Verrinder, and had to fight their way back to the semifinals through the losers round.  Röttcher/Verrinder met the No 4 seeded team of Wiebke Höritzauer/Birte Fahrbach in the first semifinal. The latter took revenge for their 1st round defeat against the very same opponents, winning 2-0 to book a place in the final. The other semifinal pitted two generations against each other.

The junior national team comprising of Kim Seebach and Stephanie Palmhert came up against veterans Hennes and Lück. The latter proved that experience counts winning comfortably in 2 sets to set up a final showdown against Höritzauer and Fahrbach.

In an exciting 3-set match played under floodlights, Hennes and Lück won their first tourney this year with juniors Seebach and Palmhert having to be satisfied with the consolation 3rd place.
