Brushes of confidence …Paulus builds career in beauty

ONGWEDIVA – What started as a hobby for Elizabeth Paulus has become a fulfilling career in professional makeup artistry.

With over eight years of experience, she has built a name for herself in bridal and editorial makeup, known for her natural and skin-focused looks that enhance beauty.

Growing up in a close-knit family of six siblings, Paulus said her upbringing taught her the importance of hard work and following her passion.

“We did not have a lot, but my parents always encouraged us to do what we love and do it well,” she said.

Her creative spark started early while she was a learner at Hashiyana Combined School and Eheke Senior Secondary School.  “I was always drawn to colours and faces,” she recalled.

“Even in class, I would find myself sketching or flipping through magazines, imagining how I could recreate the makeup looks,” Paulus said.

After matriculating, she worked in various offices and retail jobs, but she never felt truly satisfied.

Makeup, however, remained a constant source of joy.

“No matter what job I had, I always went back to makeup,” she said.

Her defining moment was when a close friend asked her to do bridal makeup.  “Seeing her face light up after I finished was a moment I will never forget. That is when I realised that this was more than just a hobby,” Paulus said.

Transitioning into the beauty industry was not easy.  She said she faced the challenge of building a client base from scratch and managing expectations in an era shaped by social media filters.

“Some clients expect perfection, but I have learned the importance of helping them appreciate their natural beauty,” Paulus said.

She added that one of her biggest lessons have been the value of patience and professionalism.  “Building a loyal client base takes time, but it is worth it. Every satisfied client becomes part of your story,” she stated.

Even during quiet seasons, she keeps herself busy by practising new techniques, updating her portfolio and creating content for social media.

“Those slower days are important. They give me time to learn, reflect and prepare for the next busy period,” she said.

Paulus’ calm demeanour and attention to detail have earned her a loyal following, especially among brides.

“I treat every client with care because it is not just about makeup, but it is about confidence. When someone looks in the mirror and smiles, that’s the best reward,” she stated. To young people dreaming of turning their passion into a career, Paulus offers simple advice.

“Start small and stay consistent. Passion alone is not enough. You need discipline, patience and belief in yourself. Success doesn’t happen overnight – but if you keep going, it will come,” she remarked.
