ONGWEDIVA -The police in Oshana Region last Friday arrested two suspected thieves whom they caught sharing some goods stolen from a shop.

The goods were allegedly stolen from a shop at Oupumako in Ongwediva last week on Friday.

“The duo was arrested with the assistance of members of the public, who informed the police of their whereabouts and as a result we caught them red-handed,” said the Oshana Regional Commander, Commissioner Ndahangwapo Kashihakumwa.

The two suspects, Lukas Petrus and Tuhafeni Sheehamandje, appeared in the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court on Monday and their case was postponed to December 11 for further investigations.

It is alleged the duo got access into the shop while the guard on duty was away. Although the guard had initially confessed he was at the shop when two armed men showed up at the shop, he retracted his statement later and informed the police he was not at the shop when the burglary occurred.

Upon enquiry the guard confessed he lied because he did not want his employer to know he was not on duty at the time of the break-in.

Kashihakumwa said the police were able to recover N$4 344 of the N$9 142 that the duo stole.

Some of the recovered items include nine bottles of Squadron rum, seven bottles of Richelieu brandy, nine bottles of Bells whisky, four bottles of White Horse whisky, 26 Panado tablets, three packs of cigarettes and recharge vouchers worth N$75, among other items.

According to Kashihakumwa the duo was sharing their goods when the police showed up at their hideout in a house at Oshoopala informal settlement in Oshakati.

Kashihakumwa said the two suspects are well known to the police as habitual criminals.
