Cricket Namibia (CN) has reached a historic milestone by signing 10 professional contracts with the Capricorn Eagles.
This groundbreaking move not only signifies a significant step forward for women’s cricket in the country but also marks the first time female cricketers in Namibia have been offered professional contracts, underscoring CN’s commitment to the growth of female cricket.
The contract signing establishes cricket as the only sporting code in Namibia with full-time contracts for both men and women national players.
The contracts were negotiated and signed in February this year and were announced at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Namibia Cricket Ground recently.
The momentous occasion also highlighted the hard work and dedication the talented athletes have put into the game. It further serves as a testament to CN’s commitment to promoting and supporting women’s cricket at both national and international levels.
CN CEO Johan Muller expressed his delight at this significant development.
“For the first time, we have been able to professionalise the women’s game. This is a significant moment for sports in the country. It’s the first time ladies have been signed on contracts where cricket is their occupation.
The ladies can support their households by pursuing their passion.
“We want to thank Capricorn Group, and everyone involved,” he added.
The Capricorn Eagles, currently ranked 17th in the world in Women’s T20I team rankings, have consistently been thriving and showcased determination on the global stage.
With the support of these professional contracts, they are poised to reach new heights and make Namibia proud.
Marlize Horn, group executive of brand and corporate affairs for Capricorn Group, echoed Muller’s sentiments.
“This is a very exciting day for women in Namibia and the Capricorn Eagles. Thank you to the board and management of CN for this unbelievable and amazing gesture. We know the Capricorn Eagles will make Namibia proud,” she said.
Horn also emphasised Capricorn Group’s pride in their association with CN.
“My opinion is that cricket is the most professionally run sport in Namibia, so we are very proud of our association.
“From our side, girls, congratulations on receiving your contracts. We know you will now work even more harder and make us proud,” she noted.
The contracted players are Kayleen Green, Sune Wittmann, Arrasta Diergaardt, Edelle van Zyl, Bianca Manuel, Irene van Zyl, Wilka Mwatile, Mekelaye Mwatile, Naomi Benjamin and Saima Tuhadeleni.
