RUNDU – A teacher from Rundu Senior Primary School, Desmond Zulu Makuki, 26, lost his life in an accident on Thursday evening on the dusty and slippery gravel road from Ncaute village, south of Rundu.
Makuki, who was also active in sport, died on the spot after the 4×4 Toyota bakkie he was driving left the road and overturned at about 18h00 on Thursday evening near Ncucuni village. He was driving from a farm which is in the Ncaute area south of Rundu.
His death touched many that knew him. He played for Rundu Chiefs before joining Bingo FC as a goalkeeper this year.
“The death of our boy came as shocking news. We are very much touched and we pray that he is in a better place. Our condolences to the bereaved family,” said Bingo FC team manager Siwombe Conrad.
Makuki was a dedicated teacher who eneterd the profession in 2012 after graduating from the Rundu Unam campus. He coached learners from his school in the sports project called SCORE.
At the time of the accident Makuki was with his two friends who were also his colleagues at Rundu Senior Primary School in Rundu, Hausiku Ambrosius and Makanga Laurentius, who both escaped death but with serious injuries .
Detective Chief Inspector Ewald Kavara of the Rundu police urged people to drive with caution as the road has claimed many lives.
The road has dangerous sharp curves and the gravel is lose and slippery making it hard for a driver to control a fast moving car when approaching a curve.
“Road users should be wary when using that road. My condolences to the family of the late Desmond,” said Kavara.
