ONGWEDIVA – A 49-year-old woman died after she was hit by a car while crossing the road with her ten-year-old daughter near Ongwediva Elcin Parish Church at Old Ongwediva location.
The tragic accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon.
“The daughter and her mother had just been dropped by a taxi when they attempted to cross the road which unfolded in a horrible accident,” related a source.
The Regional Commander of the Oshana Police Commissioner Ndahangwapo Kashihakumwa confirmed the accident.
He said the woman died on the spot while her daughter was rushed to the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment. Her condition was described to be stable.
According to Kashihakumwa the driver of the vehicle was en route to Ondangwa. A case of culpable homicide was opened against the 39-year-old driver Emma Katumbo from Okapya village.
Police took a statement from Katumbo.
The regional commander urged motorists to respect traffic signs when driving on national roads and to respect all pedestrians.
“There are senior citizens, children, mentally unstable people and those that have abused alcohol crossing the road, they need our protection,” he stated.
He appealed to pedestrians to be vigilant when crossing the road – “double check before you cross, look left and right and when it is safe then you cross.”
