President Hage Geingob has started his second and final term as head of state with some bold Cabinet appointments, while appointing a 23-year-old as deputy minister.

Despite much speculation, Air Namibia has set the record straight regarding its operations and interpretation of Cabinet resolutions on measures to strengthen Namibia’s preparedness and response to the Covid-19. The national airline has reiterated it is in full conformity with government’s resolutions.

On Namibia’s 30th independence anniversary, President Hage Geingob launched a new N$30 commemorative banknote, issued by the Bank of Namibia (BoN). The once-off print commemorative banknote is the first of its kind to be issued by BoN, with the sole purpose to celebrate Namibia’s 30th independence anniversary.   

The 96 members of the National Assembly, with voting powers, were sworn in on Friday for the next five years until 2025. Reappointed Vice president Nangolo Mbumba was also sworn in, but will now have to resign from parliament after he was installed as vice president on Saturday.

Despite misses, there have been improvements in the public health sector from where the country was 30 years back.

After a challenging five years, rocked by weak economic growth, unemployment and an internal rebellion within the ruling party, President Hage Geingob will be looking at securing a rock-solid legacy as he starts serving his final term tomorrow. 

The health ministry yesterday announced contact tracing is underway after a German national tested positive for coronavirus, bringing the country’s confirmed cases to three. 

Since independence in 1990, the government has spent between N$90 billion and N$100 billion on the development budget in various sectors of the economy.

Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) leader McHenry Venaani has called on incoming members of parliament (MPs) to consider electing an opposition member as deputy speaker, saying this will strengthen democracy.
