One of the key challenges that professionals face today is the threat of restructuring or downsizing. Our careers are never set in stone; we can shape and mould them in a variety of ways, depending on the circumstances that we face. This includes taking advantage of our transferable skills to navigate career changes and to remain relevant in today’s world of work and digital space.
Transferable skills defined
Transferable or portable skills are proficiencies that are useful across different industries or roles. It can be applied in multiple industries and job functions, regardless of your specific role or field. These skills can help you adapt to changing circumstances and make you more attractive to potential employers. For example, if you are transitioning from a career in finance to a career in HR, you might be able to leverage your analytical skills and attention to detail to help you excel in your new role.
Restructuring /career shift
When faced with downsizing, restructuring or career transition, it is important to take a step back and assess your transferable skills. Think about the skills that you have developed throughout your career. Make a list of all the skills you possess that could be applied to a variety of roles and industries. These might include communication, leadership, problem-solving, time management, and project management, among others. Make sure your CV and LinkedIn profile prominently feature your transferable skills and be specific about how you have used these skills in your previous roles – in addition to leveraging transferable skills, endeavour to stay up-to-date with industry trends and developments. This can help you stay ahead of the curve and remain competitive in a rapidly changing job market.

Don’t limit yourself to roles that are identical to your previous ones. Instead, be open to new opportunities that allow you to use your transferable skills in different ways. Connect with people in your industry and other industries, who could assist you navigate a career change. Let them know about your transferable skills and how relevant it is to their institutions. Attend industry conferences, read industry publications and network with other professionals to stay informed about the latest trends and developments in your field.
