WINDHOEK – Citizens Football Club (FC) skipper Robert Gurirab has warned that they are on a mission to rewrite the history books by becoming the first non-premiership team to win the lucrative Bidvest Namibia Cup.

Citizens are faced with a herculean task and must negotiate their way past defending champions African Stars when they meet in the final at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Saturday, but Gurirab is not worried by the eminence of their opponents and says they will complete a double on Saturday by winning the Bidvest Cup, since the club also gained promotion to the country’s elite league recently. “We won promotion to the Premier League and we intend to put our hands on the Bidvest Cup trophy as well. We respect African Stars, they are a big team with a huge support base, but we have long been waiting for this moment and are ready to seize it,” Gurirab, who has been with the club for four years now, said. “We need to be very careful with our midfield, because once Stars settles in the middle of the park they will be dangerous. We have players that can compete and are capable of imposing themselves on Stars. It will be a great game during which anything can happen.”

Formerly known as Monitronic FC, Citizens reached the final by brushing aside United Stars via a 2-0 victory in the semifinals. This year’s winners of the Bidvest Cup will be taking home a handsome N$550 000, while the runners-up are guaranteed N$220 000 with the two losing semi-finalists receiving N$115 000 each. Tickets are on sale at Soccer House and at all Computicket outlets at Shoprite and Checkers stores countrywide and each ticket costs N$ 30.
