The City of Windhoek has approved the allocation of 1 108 erven for township development projects.
This was announced during the latest ordinary Council meeting last Thursday.
“The approval is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to improve tenure security, expand
access to municipal services and support sustainable urban development,” said Windhoek mayor Sackarias Uunona.
The approved projects include the formalisation of informal settlements in Otjomuise Extension 8, as well as major township establishment developments on Farms 1007 and 1008 in Hadino Hishongwa.
“The developments will provide residential erven, higher-density housing opportunities, business sites, public open spaces and land for schools, healthcare facilities, churches, police services and informal trading,” he added.
The City also approved the subdivision, consolidation, and rezoning of Erven 3 161 and 3 383 in Otjomuise Extension 8 to formalise an existing informal settlement currently accommodating 36 households.
The development will create 36 residential erven, public open spaces, and road infrastructure. The Council furthermore approved the need and desirability, as well as the layout approval, for township establishment on the remainder of Farm 1 008 to formalise portions of the Hadino Hishongwa C informal settlement and accommodate households relocated following the January 2025 flash floods in Otjomuise.
The proposed development will comprise 234 erven and is expected to accommodate an estimated population of 1 053 people.
The approved layout includes 212 single residential erven, four general residential erven for higher-density housing, business erven, public open spaces, institutional sites for schools, healthcare, and policing facilities, and municipal land for an open market and community services.
The municipality further approved the subdivision of Farm 1 008 into Portion A and the Remainder, as well as the establishment of a township on Portion A. The proposed development will formalise existing settlements in Hadino Hishongwa C.
The approved layout will comprise 230 erven, including 214 single residential erven, two general residential erven, business erven to support local economic activities, public open spaces, municipal sites; and institutional land for community facilities such as churches and early childhood development centres.
More so, the Council approved the township establishment on the remainder of Farm 1007 to formalise parts of the Hadino Hishongwa C, D, and E informal settlements. The proposed township development comprises 275 erven and 347 dwelling units and is estimated to accommodate approximately 1 118 people.
The approved layout includes 256 single residential erven, four general residential erven, public open spaces, institutional and municipal erven, and supporting road and municipal infrastructure.
In addition, the City also approved the subdivision of Farm 1007 into Portion A and the remainder, together with township establishment on Portion A.
