By Kuvee Kangueehi WINDHOEK Following their early exit from the MTC Namibia Football Association (NFA) Cup the previous weekend, Civics FC came back strongly and collected maximum points to consolidate the top position on the MTC Namibia Premier League. The champions collected their first three points against Black Africa on Friday evening when they beat the latter 2-0 at the SKW Stadium. The match, which pitted the log leaders against the current number one side, was closely contested by the Khomasdal-based side who were the worthy winners on the night. Civics yesterday made their intentions of winning the premier league title for a third year in a row clear when they beat Orlando Pirates 2-0 at the SKW Stadium again. The result meant Civics increased their lead at the top of the table and now have 27 points after 13 matches. It was a disappointing weekend for Black Africa who were second on the log before the weekend. The Katutura outfit despite losing three vital points to Civics also lost three points when they went down 3-2 against Friends FC at the Rehoboth Stadium. The result did not only affect the log standings at the top end but had a serious impact at the bottom end of the table. Following Friends FC’s victory coupled with Pirates’ defeat yesterday against Civics, Pirates find themselves at the bottom of the table. The Sea Robbers, as they are affectionately known, only managed to collect a single point this weekend which was from a one-all draw against Friends FC. The red lights are definitely flickering for Pirates, as there are only nine games left before the end of the season. Pirates being relegated is not an option for Pirates fans and newly appointed coach Ali Akan must be a worried man. However, Akan is optimistic that the team can avoid the big drop and said anything can happen in the next nine games. Akan said Pirates have been playing good football but the finishing has been their biggest problem. Pirates have enjoyed a good run in the MTC NFA Cup but will need to collect points to remain in the elite league. Meanwhile, Namibiasport reports that Oshakati City continued their hot away form when they beat Tigers 2-1 at the SKW Stadium on Saturday. In a fast-paced match of quick counter-attacks, both sides had numerous scoring opportunities, but Oshakati ultimately made better use of theirs. For Tigers, Letu Shatminuene came close early on, while Ace Komeya blasted wide with an open goal at his mercy midway through the first half. In the final minutes of the half, Oshakati City’s young striker Pele Shilulu blasted over the net and then beat Chester Uazenga to a loose ball to hit the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed for a foul. Tigers opened the scoring in the 62nd minute when Clive Mwale beat Oshakati’s defense to tap a cross from the right into the net. Dramatic Turn Oshakati came back and the match took a dramatic turn when Cascas Angula and Uazenga were involved in a fracas. Uazenga managed to save the ball ahead of an attacking Angula, but then he unnecesarily kicked out at Angula. The referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot and Samson Kawawa made no mistake to put the teams level. Meanwhile, Uazenga injured himself in the process and had to be replaced by an outfielder Joel Martin, since Tigers’ other keeper Fox Nambundunga was suspended for the game. Oshakati finished stronger and with five minutes to go Cascas Angula headed into the penalty area for Pele Shilulu to blast home from close range. The win sees Oshakati City moving up to second position on the log, a point behind leaders Civics.
