Windhoek
The Namibian Olympic Committee (NNOC) and the Namibia Cycling Federation (NCF) have issued a joint statement to clarify the criteria for the spot to be allocated to a local cyclist at this year’s Olympics.
“We received a formal invitation from the International Federation on 18 January 2016 and would like to thank and congratulate all the athletes who have contributed towards the points, which resulted in us earning the place,” reads the statement.
And since the alocated spot was earned collectively, NOC and NCF defined a system aimed at preserving transparency and fairness towards the local Elite road cyclists to be selected for the place to go and represent Namibia at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Both parties were in unison to operate within the NOC qualification criteria and the NCF criteria, which brought the following resolution with regard to the alocation of a points system.
Points will be allocated to the respective top road cyclist for each of the following events: i) 2015 Africa Tour points will constitute 30% of the total points; ii) 2015 All Africa Games will constitute 30% of the total points; iii) 2016 National Road Race will constitute 40% of the total points.
Following the national race, the two bodies will meet next Tuesday to finalise the points allocation. The overall winner will be announced during a joint press conference on Wednesday.
