Omaruru will this year once again play host to the 2nd edition of the popular Coca Cola National 10km Challenge, slated for this weekend at Luna Park.

Namibia’s renowned sport consultant, Berthold Karumendu, officially launched the race in the capital yesterday. At the occasion the headline sponsor, Coca Cola, reaffirmed its commitment with a handsome sponsorship of N$30 000, to ensure the smooth running of the event.

Winners in the various categories are guaranteed to walk away with some good prize monies. The winner in the male and female U/20-39 age categories is each set to take home N$2 000, while the 2nd and 3rd placed finishers will go home with N$1 000 and N$700, respectively.

In both the male and female U/13-19 age groups, the first placed finishers will win N$1 500, while 2nd and 3rd placed finishers will be rewarded with N$1 000 and N$700.

In both the male and female veterans categories (U/40-49), winners are guaranteed to pocket N$1 000, while 2nd and 3rd placed finishers get N$700 and N$500.

In both the male and female master categories (50 years and older), the top three finishers will take home N$700, N$500 and N$300 respectively, in that order.

Karumendu used the opportunity to announce next month’s Navachab Gold Mine 21km Half Marathon. The marathon will take place at Karibib and is expected to attract athletes from all corners of the country.

Navachab Gold Mine has this year channelled N$45 000 towards the race with the hope of taking the event to greater heights. Karumendu, who will also spearhead the organisation of the race, promised to make the race bigger and better.

Just after Namibia’s independence the race was among the the big events on the local sporting calendar and produced many athletic greats, but the race slowly died away due to a lack of sponsors.
