The Ministry of Education wants to rekindle the passion for singing among learners.

The Arts Directorate in the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture, has undertaken a regional choir competition, which to date has reached 11 of the country’s 14 regions.

The competition aims to restore choral singing in schools and the community at large.

Ivan Scheffers one of the competition organisers, on Friday said children “should sing again, alongside all other activities they engage in”.

The competition has three categories, namely, primary schools, secondary schools and youth or community choirs.
Each of the categories offers prize money of N$10 000 for first place, N$5 000 for second and N$3 000 for third.

Scheffers explained that the competition has had a huge impact on schools and communities where it took place already – “leaving huge smiles on many young faces at the end of each competition.”

The competition culminates in a grand finale on September 12 in Windhoek where the winning youth or community choirs from each region will meet for another round. Twenty-seven choirs have entered the singing contest.

The regional winners will slug it out for cash prizes of N$30 000, N$20 000 and N$10 000 respectively.
