Contractor Abandons Road Project

Home Archived Contractor Abandons Road Project

By William J. Mbangula OSHAKATI Work on the three -kilometre portion of the Okahao-Tsandi road, which was being tarred, has been abandoned due to the non-payment of contractors. The two contractors, Grinaker-LTA and the Roads Contractor Company (RCC), downed tools more than two weeks ago after the Ministry of Works, Transport and Communication failed to pay them for three months. Grinaker-LTA contract director Kevin Fick confirmed the incident but declined to comment further. He referred the newspaper to the Road Authority (RA)’s project controlling engineer Andreas Helmig. Approached for comment, Helmig could not reveal the amount owed but confirmed that the Ministry had failed to pay. The RA is the executing agent of the Ministry. “I am very unhappy about this because it never happened before,” he said. Helmig further pointed out that the Ministry had assured him that the money was being sourced and would soon be transferred to pay for the services rendered. Grinaker-LTA and RCC were also the contractors for the 55-kilometre tarred road from Outapito Tsandi and they were just about to finish the last portion to Okahao when things went wrong.
