OMUTHIYA – Oshikoto education director Aletta Eises says the authorities have taken into consideration the safety of learners and teachers at King Kauluma Combined School, which will see police officers embarking on a de-mining operation of the entire school premises.
Eises said the exercise is lengthy and very expensive. The directorate recently roped in police officers to de-mine an area on the school premises earmarked for the construction of a hostel. According to the education director, over N$500 000 has been spent on the exercise thus far.
“Once they are done with this phase, we will use their services again to de-mine the schoolyard which is also manifested with war armaments.
We can no longer talk about the high cost that should be the least concern because human lives matter. We do not want to risk the lives of teachers and learners anymore. Safety should reign supreme,” said Eises during a recent interview.
Eises’ reaction follows a comment by a teacher at King Kauluma who suggested last week they were unable to establish a school garden, as the envisaged area is feared to harbour explosives.
“I can therefore assure the public this specific issue will be addressed and the whole school area will be cleared once they are done with the hostel part,” reiterated Eises.
