Home Crime and Courts Crooks masquarade as municipal officials

WALVIS BAY – The Walvis Bay municipality has warned residents against housing scams currently being operated in Walvis Bay.

Mayor of Walvis Bay Uilika Nambahu says there are crooks who go around registering  those desperately trying to obtain homes through a bogus registeration process.

The suspects allegedly masquarade as municipal workers assigned to register people without homes to get houses once the show houses that are currently under construction are completed.

“These criminally minded individuals are doing this under the guise that they represent the municipality of Walvis Bay’s property section.  The scammers apparently told those who registered that they would  be guaranteed a house when the  show houses are completed,” the Walvis Bay mayor revealed. “We acknowledge the urgency and the need for proper housing at  Walvis Bay, therefore we would like to request whoever is involved in this scam to stop with immediate effect.  Community members approached by such scammers should report them to the police. No one should register for any housing as the municipality will directly share information that needs to be communicated to residents,” she further said.

Meanwhile, the Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) has also sent out a warning to clients to be vigilant and to be aware of a new  scam where dubious letters are being circulated to Namport clients purportedly from the port utility claiming that their banking details have changed and that they should channel all payments due on their accounts to an ABSA bank account with details of the said account being attached. “Namport cordially warns all our customers that this is a scam and our bank details have not changed. As such, Namport will not take responsibility for any payments made into this account and expects payments to be made to the existing accounts, details of which are directly obtainable from Namport,” said Namport.

“Should you require any clarity or any additional details on this, please contact the Manager Finance, Miss Gail Hill on 00264 64 2082212,” reads a Namport statement.
