Cuca Tops netball ready for premier league challenge

Cuca Tops netball ready for premier league challenge

Cuca Tops Netball Club’s head coach Thihako Theophilie Kambita said her team is prepared to compete in the MTC Netball Namibia Premier League after recently gaining promotion to the top-flight.

The Kavango East-based club was one of four teams that earned a spot in the top-flight after winning the playoffs at Khomasdal Stadium last month. This marks the second time a team from the region has reached the premier league, following Eastern Chiefs’ participation in 2023.

Kambita described the promotion as a major achievement, especially given the tough competition in the playoffs.

“Every team dreams of playing in the premier league, and we are excited to finally get the opportunity. Competing at this level comes with exposure and development benefits for both players and coaches,” she said.

The coach emphasised that the team is actively strengthening its squad to handle the league’s high level of competition.

“We are recruiting experienced players to ensure we can compete against strong teams like Navy and Namibia Correctional Service (NCS). Our goal is to establish ourselves in the league and not just be participants,” said the coach.

Regarding potential challenges, Kambita remains confident. “We know it won’t be easy, but we’re not afraid. We will work ten times harder than we did in the lower division to make our presence felt,” she added.

Their primary objective for the upcoming season is to secure their place in the league and avoid relegation. “Our focus is on improving fitness, commitment and confidence. Staying in the premier league is our priority,” she added.

Mupiri Elizabeth, the team captain, shared that the play-offs were an eye-opener on what they should expect in the upcoming season.

“I enjoyed the play-offs, as they acted as an eye-opener. We now know what to expect in the coming season, showed us where to fix and work on, especially our mistakes.

Playing in the top flight isn’t like playing in the lower division, it would mean that we have to bring our A-game to the court and we have to trust each other,” she added.

During the play-offs last month, Netball Namibia’s secretary general Sofia Simon congratulated Cuca Tops and other teams that gained promotion.

“The playoffs showcased incredible talent and determination from all participating teams. I urge the promoted teams to work hard, stay disciplined and maintain the competitive spirit as they join the premier league,” Simon said.
