Lawrance Doeseb and David ‘Halaand’ Ndeunyema both earned their senior debuts at the ongoing Cosafa Cup tournament, and are hopeful this opportunity will lead to more.
The 21-year-old Doeseb earned his first cap after coming on in the second half of the opening match against Angola, while Ndeunyema (21) earned his first international cap in Monday’s tie against Lesotho.
Reflecting on the experience, Doeseb, who plays for Eeshoke Chula Chula, said it has been positive, and he hopes to get more playing time. He highlighted the support from senior players who have been mentoring him and other junior players to stay grounded.
“I feel good to have made my debut at such a big competition. It’s an honour to represent your country at a prestigious event like the Cosafa Cup. I think I didn’t get enough minutes on the field, but it is still a huge achievement,” Doeseb said.
“The senior players have been instrumental in the camp. They always guide us on what to do and what not to do. We have learned that the most important thing is to represent our country with pride, and win games. If given a chance, moving forward, I hope to make a significant impact and maybe attract interest from clubs here in South Africa,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ndeunyema, who plays for Blue Waters, expressed his hope that this opportunity will open many other doors. “It’s every player’s dream to represent their country at such a tournament.
I am grateful for the opportunity, and thank my coach and the senior players for their support and tips. Personally, I would like to have more game time, and maybe score my first goal as well,” he said.
Ndeunyema further expressed his expectations for the team to advance to the next round. “My expectations are high, and I did my best in the match against Lesotho. Although it won’t be easy, I hope we reach the final of the tournament,” he added.
