WINDHOEK– The Delta Primary School has been declared the winner of the Disaster Risk Management School Initiative in the primary schools category.

They were in competition with the Khomasdal Primary School, Marthi Artissari Primary School, Klein Professor Primary School, Moses Garoeb Primary School, Delta Primary School, Augeikhas Primary School, Michelle Mclean Primary School, Berthold  Himumuine Primary School, Peoples Primary School and the  St Georges  School. Coveting the first place and they got a trophy, one mega phone and gold medals. In the second place was the St. Georges School, who got silver medals, first aid box and two reflectors vests. The third place went to the Michelle Mclean Primary School who went home with bronze medals, a fire extinguisher and two reflectors vests.

Eldorado High School, competing with Acacia Secondary, Academia Secondary School, Delta Secondary School, Windhoek Technical High School won this category walking away with a trophy, one mega phone, gold medals, two bags and two reflectors vests. The Windhoek Technical High School came second winning silver medals, a first aid box and two reflectors vests while the Delta secondary School in the third place received bronze medals, a fire extinguisher and two reflectors vests.  

 None went home empty handed as all schools that participated in the Initiative were  given certificates of participation.The initiative was introduced in 2004 for school within the City and scaled up in 2012. In 2012 the Initiative was rolled out as a pilot project to few schools within City of Windhoek, namely, Havana Primary School, Otjomuise Project School, All Nations Christian School and David Bezuidenhout Secondary School. The aim of the Initiative is to ensure that schools are better prepared for emergencies or disaster that may affect them any given time. The Initiative focuses on developing emergency preparedness plans for schools and intensifies disaster risk reduction efforts through awareness creation and education.
